Nutrition
In recent years, tainted food has led to food recalls and caused the deaths of a number of dogs and cats. As responsible, caring pet owners, it is important to provide proper nutrition to our pets. We have to do the research on whatever food we choose to feed to our animals and make sure that it is right for them. The US Food and Drug Administration maintains a listing of all recalls on their website : http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm#Link_to_Animal_Health. I highly recommend that you refer to this listing periodically.
In addition, the ASPCA maintains a poison control center, including a listing of house and garden plants that can be toxic to dogs, cats and horses. http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/

When it comes to feeding our canine companions, we can choose to feed commercially prepared food, home cooked meals or a raw food diet. there are benefits and draw backs to anyone of these options or combination of options. As I mentioned above, research is key. Make sure that you have done your research into the food that you are giving to your pet. My food of choice is Wellness brand, both for wet and dry, and it works for my dog, but it might not work for yours. Innova is another brand that I have seen good reports on, but I have never fed to my animals.
Another reminder that I feel the need to make is that a number of 'people foods' are in fact quite dangerous to dogs. The big three are chocolate (theobromine), caffeine and alcohol but the they are not the only ones. Avocado, grapes and raisins, the sweetener Xylitol, macadamia nuts, onions, garlic, chives, milk, eggs and salt are all dangerous to dogs for different reasons. While not all of these foods can be fatal to your pet, they will all make your dog sick. Considering the average weight of an Italian Greyhound is 10 pounds, even a small dose of these food can pose a severe hazard.
